What Is Earned Media Value (EMV) and How Is It Calculated?

Earned Media Value (EMV) translates organic reach, engagement, and press coverage into a dollar figure you would have spent to buy the same exposure through paid ads. Earned Media Value is the estimated dollar amount you would have had to spend on paid advertising to generate the same reach, engagement, and brand exposure that you earned organically through influencer content or press coverage. It is the modern replacement for the older AVE (Advertising Value Equivalency) metric.

The base formula is (Impressions ÷ 1,000) × CPM, where CPM is the cost per thousand impressions a brand would pay on that platform. More sophisticated models add a per-engagement value (e.g., $0.20 per Instagram like, $1.00 per comment) and adjust for sentiment, audience quality, and outlet tier.

There is no universal benchmark because EMV depends on platform, audience size, and engagement quality. A useful guideline is comparing EMV to your total campaign spend. If a $25,000 influencer program generates $100,000 in EMV, you are getting a 4x earned-to-paid ratio, which is competitive with paid social benchmarks.

AVE was the older PR metric that simply equated press coverage to display ad inventory at standard rates. EMV is more rigorous because it factors in audience engagement, outlet authority, sentiment, and platform-specific CPMs rather than treating all impressions as equal.

EMV is best used as a directional value indicator alongside hard performance metrics like website traffic, branded search lift, pipeline influence, and conversions. Use it to quantify the value of organic exposure for stakeholders, but pair it with attribution data to show the real revenue impact.
