How to Calculate TAM, SAM, and SOM
TAM, SAM, and SOM are the three layers of market sizing that investors expect to see in every pitch deck. TAM (Total Addressable Market) is the total revenue opportunity. SAM (Serviceable Addressable Market) narrows it to the segment you can realistically serve. SOM (Serviceable Obtainable Market) is what you can capture in the near term. This calculator helps you build a bottom-up market sizing model.
- Build a bottom-up TAM from customer count and contract value
- Define your SAM by narrowing to your serviceable segment
- Set a realistic SOM that investors will find credible
- Generate market sizing numbers for pitch decks and board materials
TAM/SAM/SOM Calculator FAQ
TAM is the total market demand for your product category. SAM is the portion of TAM you can realistically serve given your product, geography, and go-to-market. SOM is the share of SAM you can realistically capture in the near term.
Investors want a TAM large enough to support a venture-scale outcome ($1B+ market), a SAM that shows you understand your niche, and a SOM that represents a credible near-term revenue target backed by your current traction.
Bottom-up is more credible. Start with the number of potential customers, multiply by your average contract value, then narrow by your serviceable segment. Top-down (starting from industry reports) is useful for validation but less convincing on its own.
